At St George’s we use ‘Supersonic Phonics Friends’ to support the sequence and teaching of phonics and reading within Early Years and beyond.
We use a variety of reading schemes within school to support the teaching of reading. These include Bug Club, Oxford Reading Tree and Project X. Children have access to a fully decodable book that is matched to their phonic knowledge or reading ability, alongside a reading for pleasure book.
In the summer term every Year 1 child will take a statutory Phonics Screening Check. This is a phonic based check where the children will be expected to read 40 simple, decodable words including nonsense words. This is a process to identify if children have met the expected standard for their age. Children will be rechecked in Year 2 if they do not reach the expected standard.
Phonics in Key Stage 2
For some children, phonics teaching will continue in Key Stage 2. The teaching of phonics in Key Stage 2 will be dependent on the assessment needs of the individuals and groups in each cohort.
