PSHE Intent
At St George’s Church of England Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision of “life in all its fullness” (John 10:10). We aim to nurture confident, compassionate and resilient children who are equipped to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, both now and in the future.
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our children and community, supporting pupils to develop healthy relationships, positive wellbeing, and a strong sense of self-worth. Through high-quality PSHE education, we aim to help children become thoughtful citizens who show respect, kindness and responsibility in an increasingly diverse society.
Using the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, we provide a progressive and inclusive curriculum that enables children to:
Develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary to keep themselves safe
Understand how to manage emotions and mental wellbeing
Build respectful relationships and understand different families and communities
Make informed choices about health and lifestyle
Develop aspirations and an understanding of their role in the wider world
Our PSHE curriculum plays a central role in promoting personal development, safeguarding and British values, ensuring all pupils feel valued, listened to and prepared for life beyond primary school.
PSHE Implementation
PSHE at St George’s is taught through the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and age-appropriate curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme is structured around the key strands of:
Families and relationships
Health and wellbeing
Safety and the changing body
Citizenship
Economic wellbeing
Lessons are taught regularly and revisited over time to ensure children build knowledge and skills progressively. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support understanding and confidence when discussing sensitive topics.
PSHE lessons are delivered by trained staff in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. Teaching encourages discussion, reflection and respectful listening, allowing pupils to explore ideas, ask questions and develop empathy for others. Staff are guided by clear safeguarding procedures, and any concerns arising from PSHE lessons are followed up in line with the school’s safeguarding policy.
The curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all learners. Adaptations are made to support pupils with SEND, ensuring all children can engage meaningfully with the content. Teaching reflects the diversity of modern Britain while remaining respectful of our school’s Christian values.
PSHE is further enriched through:
Collective worship and reflection linked to values and character
Whole-school initiatives that promote wellbeing and cultural capital
Strong links with behaviour expectations and safeguarding practice
